Artillery

What is Artillery?
Artillery is the first Gunboat Weapon available, and continues to be one of the most important weapons to be used at any stage of the game. When you aim at specific point, Gunboat fires a cannon shell to damage that area.

Support your troops in battle with Gunboat!
Your Gunboat fires a high-explosive cannon shell that damages enemy buildings. Be careful not to hit your own troops!

Artillery Fact (from level 1 to 20)
Damage = 700 – 5024
At each level, Damage increases for 77, 85, 95, 106… and up to 444 in the last upgrade.

Initial Energy Cost to fire Artillery = 3
Subsequent Artillery consume 2 more Gunboat Energy than previous one.
Energy Cost consumed = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 …

One Artillery shot can hit up to 4 Buildings if they are in contact with each other.

Upgrading Tactics
Try upgrading you Artillery as much as possible. This will indirectly save your Gunboat Energy and allow you to take down key Defense Buildings before deploying your troops.

For example, Rocket Launcher level 1 has 4,000 health. You need 4 shots of Artillery level 5 – 7 to take it down, while only required 3 shots of level 8 Artillery.

Attack Tactics for Artillery
Who said playing game does not need your brain? Playing Boom Beach does require basic Mathematics especially when using Gunboat Weapons.

 1) Know your Artillery damage vs. Building health
Choose key Defense Buildings you plan to destroy, and then calculate how much Artillery you need to take down the Defense Buildings.

2) Know how much Gunboat Energy you use and gain
Calculate how much Gunboat Energy you use to fire Artillery and how much you gain back from destroying buildings.

It is very important to plan ahead how much Gunboat Energy you will use during the battle and not waste too much Energy for firing Artillery. If you use Tank, after firing Artillery, make sure that you will have enough Gunboat Energy left to deploy your Tanks.

Defense Tactics against Artillery
1) Avoid Defense building contact
Never ever place your Defense building in contact with other buildings, including corner-touch-corner. If opponent plan to destroy one Cannon using 2 Artillery shots, having another building touching the Cannon results in 3 free Gunboat Energy. Exception is Headquarters, as Headquarters has high amount of health.

In high level gameplay, this may not be true as player will have lots of buildings to arrange and sometimes it can be more effective to have tight placement.

2) Mine placement
Avoid placing Mine/Boom Mine next to Defense buildings, and avoid placing 2 Boom Mines next to each other. Artillery shot can trigger the Mine and explode them.

Lt. Hammerman

Who is Lt. Hammerman?
Lt. Hammerman is the Lieutenant of the Blackguard. He is NPC (Non-Player Character) and only one character in Blackguard military that appear in the game. He has 10 bases as known as Hammerman’s HQ spread all over the map.

In the unclear cloud, you can see his HQ lurking which show suspicious activity going on that region. Once you clear the cloud, Hammerman’s HQ appears which allow you to attack the base.

There are 10 Hammerman’s HQ consisting of base level 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60. You need higher level of Radar to unlock higher level of Hammerman’s HQ. Hammerman’s HQ contains very strong Defenses with special weapons such as MMG 9000 (Massacre Machine Gun) and Super Mortar.

Attacking Tactics for Hammerman’s HQ
1) Unlock Dr. Terror event
Defeat Hammerman’s HQ level 10 will unlock Dr. Terror Wednesday event (Terror Base). At 0:00 GMT on every Wednesday, Dr. Terror will appear on previous Hammerman’s HQ level 10 island.

Defeat Hammerman’s HQ level 20 will unlock Dr. Terror Saturday event (Volcano Base). At 0:00 GMT on every Saturday, Dr. Terror will appear on previous Hammerman’s HQ level 20 island.

It is extremely recommended to defeat Hammerman’s HQ level 10 and 20 as soon as possible to unlock Dr. Terror which allow you gain resources and Dark Power Stone from attacking Dr. Terror base.

2) Puzzle
Each Hammerman’s HQ has unique base design. Some specific sets of troops and specific route to HQ will allow you to easily take down HQ. Examine his base, consider the base as puzzle and have fun defeat him.

3) Defeat Hammerman’s HQ gives you 5 medals
If you are after Victory Point, defeat him as soon as possible is the good thing. However, if you try to manage your Matchmaking, it may be better to save him (Hammerman’s HQ level 25 or more) for later to avoid having too much Victory Points.

4) Power Stone
Hammerman base have some pre-defined Power Stones which you will get every time. His bases give you a lot of Fragments, Shards and Crystals.

Early Hammerman’s HQ gives you Magma Power Stone. Defeat them as soon as possible will allow you to have Magma Guardian or even Magma Masterpiece which greatly enhance your Troop’s Health and/or Damage for better attacking power.

Gunboat

What is Gunboat?
Who can fight battle on the Beach without Gunboat? While your troops are marching on the Beach, your Gunboat provides damage, guide and support your troops in many different ways. The battle outcomes rely heavily on the use of Gunboat Weapons, not only the strength of the weapons but also timing and tactics.

Support your troops in battle with Gunboat!
The Gunboat provides fire support and battlefield supplies to your troops. It can also relay movement orders with Flares. Upgrade your Headquarters to access new Gunboat abilities, and upgrade the Gunboat to increase its Energy capacity.

Gunboat Fact (from level 1 to 20)
Gunboat Energy = 12 – 50
At each level, Gunboat Energy increases by 2 points.

You can still use your Gunboat as normal while upgrading.
You gain 2 Gunboat Energy for each building destroyed in opponent base.
One of the Dark Statue type help increase your Gunboat Energy from 5% up to 42%.

Upgrading Tactics
Upgrade you Gunboat to maximum at each HQ level, period.

There is no too much Gunboat Energy. Ok, actually sometimes you have Gunboat Energy left over. However, starting your battle with more Gunboat Energy gives you more choice to defeat opponent bases. 2 Gunboat Energy can make a different between life and death of your troops, either one Flare to get your troops out of danger zone or one more Medkit to prolong the measly lives.

Upgrading your Gunboat Weapons in Armory is generally a good tactics when you don’t have favorite troops combination or you use a wide range of troops. Because you will normally use a lot of Gunboat Weapons during battle while you may not always use one specific troop.

Sniper Tower

What is Sniper Tower?
Sniper Tower is your first accessible Defense Building in the game. It is cheapest and fastest to build and upgrade. It may not be the most important Defense Buildings of the game, but it acts like a backbone of your base since the beginning until the high-end level. Sniper Tower size is 3x3.

This little Sniper is more deadly than you might think!
The Sniper in the tower shoots at enemy attackers. He’s armed with a long-range rifle that deals good damage.

Sniper Tower Fact (from level 1 to 20)
Damage to single unit
Long Range
Health = 1,700 – 8,400
Damage per second = 40 – 245
Time between shots = 1.4 sec.

Sniper Tower vs. Troops
Sniper Tower is effective against Zooka as it usually one shot kill the poor girl (if she is not protected by other troops).
Sniper Tower is weak against Rifleman as Rifleman normally comes in large group which can easily swarm Sniper Tower.
While Sniper Tower is normally weak against Heavy, Warrior and Tank, high level Sniper Tower combined with its long range can surprisingly deal good damage to them.

Attack Tactics against Sniper Tower
1) Swarm with Riflemen
Pure and simple, just swarm the tower.

2) Meat shield with damage
Put Heavy in frontline to absorb damage, while Zooka take the tower down.

2) Tank
4-5 Tanks can take down 1-2 Sniper Towers with not much loss of health.

Defense Tactics for Sniper Tower
1) Good Coverage
Because Sniper Tower has good range and you can have up to 6 Sniper Towers, spread them out over the base will allow you to cover the key area and important buildings.

2) HQ focus
As incoming Tanks like to clear the Defense near HQ before freely snipe down your HQ, put many Sniper Towers near HQ will make harder task for Tank attacker.

Matchmaking

What is Matchmaking System?
Matchmaking system is the system that matches one player with another player. You get new player opponents, as ‘Mercenary’ in game, when exploring more areas and as occasional Mercenary invasions on your map to occupy one of your freed islands. Player opponents are selected from players with a similar Victory Points in order to give you the right level of challenge. The Victory Points range is about plus/minus 50 VP.

Updated around 7 May 2014, the new Matchmaking will be based on the number of Victory Points a player has. Basically, try to match players with a similar Victory Point score. This new matchmaking system should address many of the problems in the old system. Most importantly, the new system is more transparent and offers a better self-balancing mechanic: If you get beaten a lot, you should eventually meet easier opponents. We know that the new system will create some new challenges, but we think these new problems are more manageable.

What does this Matchmaking system imply?
When you have more and more Victory Points, you player opponents become tougher. Eventually, you rise up to the point where you cannot beat any of them, resulting in little to no loot you can gain from raiding.

If you are not aiming for high ranking in the world, you better carefully manage the number of Victory Points you have. By limiting the number of attack and losing some home base raiding, will keep your Victory Points at reasonable level, allow you to match with similar strength or even weaker player opponents. You will then be able to obtain constant stream of loot and progress at a good pace in the game.

Does this Matchmaking System also apply to the Resource Base?
Yes, when you found or click "Find new opponent" on Resource Base, you will be matched with players with Victory Points in your range. The Resource Base level or how tough Defense buildings are, do not matter at all.

How about NPC Matchmaking?
<NPC as known as Non-Player Character>
You get new NPC opponents, referred to as ‘Blackguard’ in game, when exploring the map and as occasional Blackguard invasions on your map to occupy one of your freed islands. NPC bases are created by Game Developer and design for you as some kind of "Single Player Campaign".

Your NPC are randomly selected. However, as you defeat each NPC bases, next NPC you found will be more difficult, and give you more loot resources. Notes that sometimes you will get the same name of NPC base with higher level. The base will have similar setup with higher level of Defense, or more Defense Buildings to match with your advanced Attacking capabilities.

Player opponents are shown as red person with small circle indicating their experience level and their white name under the circle. After 22-24 hours, you will get white exclamation mark in small yellow circle, allowing you to ‘Find new opponent’ in case you feel the base is too hard to attack or the loot is not worth the effort.

NPC opponents are shown only red circle indicating level of the base with white name under it. The name mostly reflects how the base is set up.

Matchmaking, Dive Locations, Statue Build Times
- Improving early game Matchmaking, specifically for new players who are just discovering other player bases
- Lowering the time it takes for your game to “roll the dice” on getting a new dive location (down to 17 hours 51 minutes)
- Shortening Statue build times to 10 seconds (Idol), 1 hour (Guardian) and 10 hours (Masterpiece)
- Fixing a bug where the Level 19 Gunboat gave 3 extra energy and Level 20 only gave 1 (both will now give 2)

Respawn mechanism of Dive Locations
1) Dive locations only start to respawn after you have two dive locations left on your map
2) The chances of a dive location respawning increases as you have fewer of them. With zero dive location on your map, you have the biggest chance of a new on spawning.
3) Your game will “roll the dice” every 17 hours 51 minutes 26 hours 47 minutes to see if you get a new dive location.
4) Dive locations can take several days or even weeks to respawn if you are unlucky.

Undersea Adventure:
- Hunt for treasure under the waves with a brand new Submarine!
- Find dive locations on your map, and send the Submarine to retrieve sunken treasure
- Submarine unlock at HQ9. Find dive locations by exploring the map using Radar level 7 and above.

Shock and Awe:
- Give attackers a jolt with Shock Launcher, a new high-level defensive building (unlock at HQ17)
- Enemy troops in the area of effect will be temporarily stunned. Stop rushing Warriors in their tracks!

- Your efforts to fight the Blackguard are now rewarded daily! More Victory Points give you a bigger reward (reward boat arrive your island at 0:00 GMT)

- An all-new daily report in the Enemy Activity pane shows the number of times your home base was scouted, attacked and raided by the enemy
- Victory reward of an enemy base is now visible as a map popup after the island has been scouted

Chill Out:
- A mysterious cold spell has swept across the archipelago, and ice now covers all islands in the Northern region of the map
- Ice Power Stones only appear on frozen islands

- Shock Bomb price increased from 7, 10, 13, 16,… to 7, 12, 17, 22,…

Headquarters

What is Headquarters?
Headquarters (HQ) is your main and most important building. You cannot command your base and entire army without it. HQ size is 5x5.

Nerve Center of your base!
The Headquarters is the nerve center of your base. Upgrading the HQ unlocks new base buildings and upgrades. If you HQ is destroyed, the attacking enemy wins the fight and can steal your resources. The HQ receives damage whenever one of your base buildings is destroyed.

Headquarters Fact (from level 1 to 20)
They can store 3,000 Gold / 2,000 Wood / 2,000 Stone / 2,000 Iron.
Health = 10,000 – 130,000

When other buildings in your base are destroyed, Headquarters receives some damage. Therefore, it can be a good tactics sometimes to destroy some other buildings before aiming at the Headquarters.

Upgrading Tactics
Since the start of the game until now (Jun 2014), there is no penalty of having too high level of HQ. Players can freely attack, raid and gain same amount of loot from other players of any HQ level. Therefore, after reaching specific experience level and HQ upgrade become available, it is a best recommendation to upgrade HQ to unlock new Troops, Gunboat Ability and new Buildings.

If you decide to upgrade HQ as soon as possible, you will definitely have quite number of buildings stay at low level or un-upgraded at all. Supercell intentionally designs the game in this way which makes upgrading tactics more challenging. Equally upgrade everything seems like a good idea, however you will struggle to death as balance is not quite the right word for this game. The fun part is you have to choose which area to focus. Some players enjoy upgrade Attack power leaving base at lowly Defense buildings. Others may love to have strong Defense watching Attacking troops fail and die all over again.

Attack Tactics for Headquarters
1) Rush/Semi-rush HQ
Ignore everything else and go straight to HQ. Warrior is the main troop for this tactic, can destroy HQ in split second. Heavy + Zooka (Hooka) tactics are good as well, Zooka can deal tons of damage, quickly take down HQ.

2) Snipe from distance
Tank, with longest range, can position them and fire at HQ without any interference. Use Artillery and Barrage to take down key Defense buildings near HQ before maneuver Tanks to safe position.

Defense Tactics for Headquarters
1) Spread out buildings
Place buildings spread all over the base. HQ can be at center or very far in the back of the base. While the Defenses are weaker because of spreading out, Attacking Troops will be harder to manage and Flare will be needed to use more often than normal. Troops will randomly stray out of the main army which can be easily killed.

2) Beachfront
Put all Defenses and HQ right near the beach. This tactic protects all Support and Economy buildings, prevent Attacker to gain free Gunboat Energy. However, it is weak against Warrior or any army that can deal tons of damage in a short period of time.

3) Dockside (or sometime left-hand side near mountain)
Put HQ at the edge or corner near the dock, surrounded by key Defense buildings.  Tank army will hate this placement because they have to go through the most numbers of Sniper Tower, Cannon and Boom Cannon before reaching HQ. Nevertheless, this tactic hardly protects other buildings thus giving out a lot of free Gunboat Energy.

Rifleman

What is Rifleman?
First troop ever available in your army, this little man is unlocked at Headquarters level 1 since you start the game. With only 1 space per unit required in Landing Craft, he can effectively fit in any level of Landing Craft. Cheap training cost and short training time make Rifleman good all around any stage of the game.

Strength in Numbers
Rifleman at the ready! Basic infantry units, the Riflemen are able to deal out and withstand moderate damage. In large enough numbers, they are almost unstoppable.

Movement Speed = Moderate (220)
Range = Medium (470)
Unit Size = 1
Training Time = 1 min.
Time between shots = 1 sec.

Rifleman Fact (from level 1 to 20)
Health = 140 – 506
Damage per second = 30 – 134
Training Cost = 20 – 1,800
Upgrade Cost = 9,500 – 4,400,000

Rifleman vs. Defense Buildings
Rifleman is effective against Sniper Tower, Cannon, and Boom Cannon.
Rifleman is weak against Mine, Mortar, Machine Gun, Flame Thrower, and Rocket Launcher.

Simply, groups of Rifleman are weak against any defense that can deal damage in an area. But they are very effective as separate meat shield against single-point-defense building. Cannon and Boom Cannon will take forever to kill group of 20 Riflemen.

Attack Tactics for Rifleman
1) Pair with Heavy
Early in the game, use Heavy to absorb damage while Rifleman stays behind and deal lots of damage.

2) Tag team with Zooka / Zooka and Medic
Player base or Resource Base with lots of Sniper Tower, Cannon and Boom Cannon will easily fall down by Rifleman and Zooka team. Riflemen bravely die while Zookas shoot down everything on sight.

Later in the game when Medic is available, Rifleman-Zooka-Medic as known as RZM is another top-tier troop combination to incredibly fight against tough base.

3) Front-line with Tank
Believe it or not, all little men sacrifice themselves by taking Cannon and Boom Cannon shots. Tanks survive the battle to finish off Headquarters or Outpost.

Defense Tactics against Rifleman
1) Mortar, Machine Gun
Evenly spread out Mortar and Machine Gun to cover the entire base will help deal with Rifleman in particular.

2) Flame Thrower, Rocket Launcher 
Put Flame Thrower in key area or near Headquarters will help quickly burn down Flame Thrower. Make sure your Rocker Launcher range cover the key area or Headquarters to deal with group of incoming Riflemen.
